Why Cincinnati Has So Many Failing Walls

Greater Cincinnati is built on hills, river valleys, and clay. Clay holds water. Water freezes. Frozen saturated soil expands and pushes. What Sits Behind the Price

Drainage — the part you never see

Every wall we build gets:

  • A compacted aggregate leveling pad below frost-influenced grade
  • A 12-inch clean stone drainage zone behind the block
  • Non-woven filter fabric separating stone from native soil
  • A perforated drain pipe daylighted or tied to a solid line

Skip any one of those and you are building a dam, not a wall.

Geogrid reinforcement

Once a wall exceeds roughly 3 feet, or carries a load above it, layers of geogrid extend back into the retained soil to create a reinforced mass. Geogrid adds excavation width, which adds cost — and it is the difference between a wall that stands and one that rotates forward.

The 4-foot rule

Most local jurisdictions require an engineered, stamped design and a permit for walls over 4 feet of exposed height. Surcharge — a driveway, pool, or second wall above — can trigger the requirement at lower heights. Terracing two 3-foot walls does not automatically avoid it if they are close together; they may be treated as one structure.

Signs Your Wall Is Failing

  • Visible lean or bulge in the middle third of the wall
  • Blocks separating at joints or stair-stepping cracks
  • Soil or mulch washing through the face
  • Water always pooling behind the wall after rain
  • Fence posts or patio above tilting toward the wall

Caught early, a wall can sometimes be saved by rebuilding the top courses and correcting drainage. Caught late, it is a full rebuild.
