The quick answer

  • Start mowing based on growth and ground conditions, not a fixed date.
  • An overgrown first cut may have a different scope from routine maintenance.
  • Confirm mowing areas, access and clipping handling before service.

When is a Cincinnati lawn ready for its first cut?

Use the lawn's growth and ground conditions rather than a fixed date. One property may be ready while another remains soft or has little new growth. Tell your mowing provider about wet areas and recent seeding before the first visit.

Check the work area

Walk only where it is safe. Look for branches, toys, loose objects and areas that should be avoided. Share gate and access requirements privately. If a section is too wet for equipment, discuss whether it should be deferred rather than assuming the whole lawn must be cut on schedule.

Agree the mowing approach

University of Minnesota Extension's general Midwest guidance recommends sharp mower blades and avoiding removal of more than one-third of the grass blade in a cut. The suitable cutting height still depends on the grass and its condition.

An overgrown first visit may need a different scope from a routine maintenance cut. Ask how it will be handled rather than expecting a very short cut to reset the lawn in one pass.

Confirm what the service includes

Ask about the areas to mow, trimming, edging, clipping handling and access. Beds, branches, heavy leaves and other cleanup work should be listed separately when requested.

See our Cincinnati mowing service and lawn-care quote guide. Neither an old online starting price nor a neighboring property's rate establishes the price for your yard.

Prepare the inquiry

Send the property location, a wide yard photo, current grass condition and your preferred frequency. Mention recent lawn products or seeded areas. Request a written quote so the first visit and ongoing work can be defined separately.

Common questions

Is the first cut always in March?

No. Growth, ground conditions and the property's needs determine when mowing is appropriate.

Is cleanup included with the first mow?

Only the tasks in the agreed scope are included; mention heavy leaves, branches or beds separately.
